Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

The letter says we know that we remain in God and He in us because He has given us His Spirit. The relationship is not based only on a feeling that changes from day to day. The Spirit gives a continuing witness.

The writer and the other witnesses have seen and testify that the Father sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. Anyone who confesses that Jesus is the Son of God has God abiding in him, and he abides in God.

The community has come to know and believe the love God has for them. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God. Love is brought to maturity among believers so that they can have confidence on the day of judgment.

The reason for confidence is that in this world believers are being shaped to resemble Christ. The letter then says there is no fear in love. Perfect love drives out fear because fear involves punishment. The person who fears punishment has not been perfected in love.

This does not mean believers never feel afraid or that every fear shows spiritual failure. It addresses fear of condemnation before God. God's love in Christ gives security, while His Spirit produces courage and self-control.

The source of love is stated again: we love because God first loved us. Then the test becomes unavoidable. Anyone who says, “I love God,” but hates a brother is lying. We can see a brother; a claim to love the unseen God cannot be separated from love for the person in front of us.

Romans speaks of the Spirit of adoption rather than slavery to fear. Paul tells Timothy that God gives a spirit of power, love, and self-control. 1 John connects that confidence to visible love, not to a private claim that cannot survive contact with other people.

Families can make this distinction clear. Love drives out condemnation, not wise caution. A person can set a safe boundary without fearing that God has abandoned him. Security in God's love should make us more honest and more courageous in loving others.
