1 John 5:13-21
Keep Yourselves from Idols
13I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
14And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
15And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him.
16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he should ask God, who will give life to those who commit this kind of sin. There is a sin that leads to death; I am not saying he should ask regarding that sin.
17All unrighteousness is sin, yet there is sin that does not lead to death.
18We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning; the One who was born of God protects him, and the evil one cannot touch him.
19We know that we are of God, and that the whole world is under the power of the evil one.
20And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

The writer says he has written to those who believe in the name of the Son of God so they may know they have eternal life. The purpose is assurance, not suspense. Christian confidence is rooted in the Son and in the apostolic testimony about Him.
The letter then describes confidence in prayer. If believers ask anything according to God's will, He hears them. Because He hears, they know they possess what they have asked of Him. This is not permission to treat prayer as a way to command every desired result. The condition “according to His will” matters.
The writer gives an example of seeing a brother commit a sin not leading to death. The believer should ask God, and God will give life. He acknowledges a sin leading to death without explaining every detail. The letter does not invite anxious speculation about which ordinary failure has crossed an invisible line.
It says all unrighteousness is sin, while also distinguishing kinds of sin. The section closes with three assurances: those born of God refuse to make sin their settled way of life; God protects His children, and the evil one cannot finally seize them; believers belong to God even though the whole world lies under the evil one.
The final statement is both confession and warning. The Son of God has come, given understanding, and brought believers into the One who is true. He is the true God and eternal life. Therefore, little children, keep yourselves from idols.
