Called to Holiness

Paul moves from affection to instruction. He asks and encourages the Thessalonians in the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, just as they have received from the missionaries. They are already living this way, but Paul urges them to do so all the more.

Then he names God's will: holiness. The first application is abstaining from sexual immorality. Each person must know how to control his or her own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God.

The word “control” is important. Paul does not treat the body as dirty or sexuality as a subject that can only be discussed through shame. He calls believers to honor God and other people by refusing desire that turns into exploitation or disregard.

Verse six makes the neighbor visible. No one should violate or exploit a brother or sister in this regard, because the Lord will avenge such acts. Sexual sin is not only a private failure between consenting adults when coercion, betrayal, abuse, or exploitation is involved. The Lord sees the person who has been harmed.

Paul then says God has not called believers to impurity but to holiness. Anyone who rejects this command rejects not merely a human opinion but God, who gives His Holy Spirit. That warning should prevent two distortions: treating sexual holiness as optional, and using the command as a weapon for humiliating people rather than as a call to truthful repentance and protection.

Families need language that is clear without being crude and serious without being shaming. Teach children that their bodies and other people's bodies deserve honor. Teach them to recognize pressure, coercion, secrecy, and exploitation. Adults must model the same honesty, because children notice when a rule is applied only to the vulnerable.

Holiness is not the achievement of people who never need mercy. It is a life that receives God's call and lets the Spirit reorder desire, boundaries, and treatment of other people.
