The Covenant Is Renewed
15So they seized Athaliah as she reached the entrance of the Horse Gate on the palace grounds, and there they put her to death.
16Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people.
17So all the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.
18Moreover, Jehoiada put the oversight of the house of the LORD into the hands of the Levitical priests, whom David had appointed over the house of the LORD, to offer burnt offerings to the LORD as written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and song, as ordained by David.
19He stationed gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD, so that no one who was in any way unclean could enter.
20And he took with him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace through the Upper Gate. They seated King Joash on the royal throne,
21and all the people of the land rejoiced. And the city was quiet, because Athaliah had been put to the sword.

Athaliah is seized at the entrance to the Horse Gate and put to death. Jehoiada then makes a covenant between himself, the king, and the people: they will be the LORD's people. The change of ruler is not complete until the people are turned again toward the God whose covenant gives their public life its meaning.
The people go to the temple of Baal, tear it down, smash its altars and idols, and kill Mattan the priest. The scene is violent because Baal's worship has been installed as a rival center of power. The chapter presents the destruction of that temple as part of removing Athaliah's rule and restoring the LORD's worship.
Jehoiada places the Levitical priests over the house of the LORD, as David had appointed. Burnt offerings are offered according to the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and song. Gatekeepers are stationed so that those who are unclean cannot enter. Worship is not improvised around the excitement of the moment; it is ordered by the covenant and entrusted to responsible servants.
The commanders, nobles, rulers, and people bring Joash from the temple into the palace and seat him on the royal throne. The people rejoice, and the city becomes quiet because Athaliah has been put to the sword. Peace arrives through a difficult restoration, not through pretending the years of violence did not happen.
