2 Corinthians 12:19-21
To Build You Up
19Have you been thinking all along that we were making a defense to you? We speak before God in Christ, and all of this, beloved, is to build you up.
20For I am afraid that when I come, I may not find you as I wish, and you may not find me as you wish. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, rage, rivalry, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.
21I am afraid that when I come again, my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of their acts of impurity, sexual immorality, and debauchery.

Paul anticipates that the Corinthians may think he is merely defending himself to them. He says they are wrong. He and his coworkers speak before God in Christ, and everything they say is meant to build the church up.
That purpose does not make the coming visit comfortable. Paul fears that he may find them unlike what he hopes, and that they may find him unlike what they want. He fears quarreling, jealousy, rage, rivalry, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder. These are not minor personality differences when they have become the atmosphere of a church.
Paul also fears that God will humble him and that he will grieve over people who sinned earlier and have not repented. He names impurity, sexual immorality, and debauchery. He is not asking the church to create public shame around survivors or to treat sexual sin as a tool for control. He is calling people who have done wrong to truthful repentance.
Building up can include warning. A loving community does not choose between kindness and moral clarity. It tells the truth about destructive behavior, protects people from harm, and hopes for repentance that leads to a different life.

Prayer
God of truth, make our love strong enough to confront what destroys. Protect those who are vulnerable, lead wrongdoers to genuine repentance, and help our words build people up rather than create shame. Amen.
