The Fragrance of Christ
12Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and a door stood open for me in the Lord,
13I had no peace in my spirit, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.
14But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.
15For we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
16To the one we are an odor that brings death, to the other a fragrance that brings life. And who is qualified for such a task?
17For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as men sent from God.

Paul went to Troas because an open door had appeared for preaching the gospel. The opportunity was real, yet he did not feel at peace because Titus was not there. His concern for a fellow worker affected him deeply enough that he left for Macedonia.
Paul does not hide this tension. A good opportunity and a troubled heart can exist at the same time. Faithful service is not a promise that every open door will feel simple, or that a person must ignore relationships and grief in order to appear productive.
Even while describing his unrest, Paul gives thanks to God. He sees God as the One who leads him in Christ and spreads the knowledge of Christ through him. The picture is of a fragrance moving outward. The same gospel is received differently by different people: it is life-giving to some and exposes death to others.
That weighty work raises Paul's question: who is qualified? His answer appears in the contrast with people who peddle God's word for profit. Paul speaks with sincerity before God, as someone sent by God. He is not using his ministry to pursue personal gain.

Lord Jesus, make our lives a truthful witness to Your grace. Give us compassion for people we love, honest motives in our service, and humility about the work You entrust to us. Amen.
