Equality in Giving
10And this is my opinion about what is helpful for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give, but even to have such a desire.
11Now finish the work, so that you may complete it with the same eager desire, according to your means.
12For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.
13It is not our intention that others may be relieved while you are burdened, but that there may be equality.
14At the present time, your surplus will meet their need, so that in turn their surplus will meet your need. This way there will be equality.
15As it is written: “He who gathered much had no excess, and he who gathered little had no shortfall.”

Paul gives his opinion about what would help the Corinthians. They had been the first to desire an offering and had begun giving the year before. He does not question whether they can match someone else's gift. He asks them to finish the work with the same eager desire with which they began it.
The standard is according to means. If the eagerness is present, a gift is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what that person does not have. This protects generosity from becoming a demand that harms the giver or a contest in which the poorest are made to feel spiritually inferior.
Paul states his aim plainly: he does not want others relieved while the Corinthians are burdened. He wants equality. At one time their surplus can meet another church's need; at another time another church's surplus can meet theirs. Need and abundance move through the body of Christ.
He quotes the account of manna: the one who gathered much had no excess, and the one who gathered little had no shortfall. The point is not that every household will have identical possessions. It is that God's people should not treat abundance as private entitlement while brothers and sisters lack what they need.
