Jehu's Incomplete Obedience

32In those days the LORD began to reduce the size of Israel. Hazael defeated the Israelites throughout their territory
33from the Jordan eastward through all the land of Gilead (the region of Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh), and from Aroer by the Arnon Valley through Gilead to Bashan.
34As for the rest of the acts of Jehu, along with all his accomplishments and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
35And Jehu rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria, and his son Jehoahaz reigned in his place.
36So the duration of Jehu’s reign over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

The LORD begins to reduce Israel's territory during Jehu's reign. Hazael defeats the Israelites east of the Jordan, in lands belonging to Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh. The account names the losses from Aroer by the Arnon Valley through Gilead to Bashan.
Jehu had overthrown Ahab's house and removed Baal worship, but the preceding verses say he continued Jeroboam's sins. Here his military strength cannot preserve the kingdom's borders. Kings attributes the reduction to the LORD, whose authority extends beyond the palace and its plans.
After twenty-eight years, Jehu dies and is buried in Samaria. His son Jehoahaz succeeds him. The record points to further accounts of his accomplishments and might, but those achievements do not reverse these losses. A king powerful enough to overthrow a dynasty remains subject to God.
