When Jesus Is Revealed

Paul says it is right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict His people and to give relief to those who are oppressed. The promise begins with God's justice, not with the Thessalonians taking revenge. Their suffering matters because God sees it, and final judgment does not belong to the people who have been wronged.

The relief and judgment will come when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in blazing fire. The language is weighty because the passage is describing the public unveiling of Jesus' authority. It is not inviting Christians to imagine themselves as the agents of divine vengeance in ordinary conflicts.

Those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel will suffer eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His might. This is a serious description of judgment, and it should not be softened into mere inconvenience. It also should not be used carelessly to label every opponent or to make frightened children carry adult arguments.

On that day Jesus will be glorified in His saints and regarded with wonder by all who have believed, including these Thessalonians. The same coming that brings judgment to evil brings honor to Christ and wonder to His people. Their future is not merely escape from pain; it is belonging to the Lord when His worth is seen clearly.

Paul therefore prays that God will count them worthy of His calling and fulfill every good desire and work of faith. Worthiness here is a life that fits the calling God has given, empowered by God rather than manufactured through anxious effort. The goal is that Jesus' name will be glorified in them, and they in Him, according to grace.

Families can hold justice and restraint together. We may name harm truthfully, seek protection and proper help, and trust God with the final settling of accounts. Christian hope does not ask victims to call evil harmless. It keeps judgment from becoming our private possession.
