When Jesus Is Revealed

Paul says it is right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict His people and to give relief to those who are oppressed. The promise begins with God's justice, not with the Thessalonians taking revenge. Their suffering matters because God sees it, and final judgment does not belong to the people who have been wronged.

The relief and judgment will come when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in blazing fire. Jesus' authority will be publicly revealed; the persecuted church will receive relief from Him.

Paul describes the punishment of those who reject God and His gospel:

They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His might,

Rejection of God and His gospel has consequences that reach beyond this life.

On that day Jesus will be glorified in His saints and regarded with wonder by all who have believed, including these Thessalonians. The same coming that brings judgment to evil brings honor to Christ and wonder to His people. Their future is not merely escape from pain; it is belonging to the Lord when His worth is seen clearly.

Paul therefore prays that God will count them worthy of His calling and fulfill every good desire and work of faith. Worthiness here is a life that fits the calling God has given, empowered by God rather than manufactured through anxious effort. The goal is that Jesus' name will be glorified in them, and they in Him, according to grace.

Paul's prayer gives the waiting church work to do now. God can bring their good desires into action so that their lives honor the Jesus they will one day see.
