10You, however, have observed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my perseverance,
11my persecutions, and the sufferings that came upon me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.
12Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
13while evil men and imposters go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Timothy has observed Paul's teaching and life: his purpose, faith, patience, love and perseverance. Those qualities stand in contrast to the false godliness Paul has just described. Timothy has received instruction from someone whose conduct he also knows.
Paul names persecutions in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra. Acts describes him being driven out, threatened and stoned in those places. The Lord rescued him, but rescue did not mean that the suffering never happened. God sustained His servant through real opposition.
Paul prepares Timothy for opposition too. Those who desire a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. This is a warning about the cost of faithfulness, not an invitation to provoke hostility or treat every criticism as persecution.
Meanwhile, evil people and imposters worsen, both deceiving and being deceived. Their apparent success is not a safe example to follow. Timothy is to remain with the teaching and godly life he has known, trusting the Lord who has sustained Paul. Endurance rests in God's help and is expressed through actual faith, love and patience.
How We Know
Acts records persecution at Antioch, a threatened attack at Iconium and Paul's stoning at Lystra, the same places named here in the same order. This supplies concrete accounts of the suffering Paul recalls. Acts 16:1 later places Timothy at Lystra, but does not say he witnessed the earlier stoning.
