Amos 3:9-15
Oppression in the Citadels

9Proclaim to the citadels of Ashdod and to the citadels of Egypt: “Assemble on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest in the city and the acts of oppression in her midst.”
10“For they know not how to do right,” declares the LORD. “They store up violence and destruction in their citadels.”
11Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “An enemy will surround the land; he will pull down your strongholds and plunder your citadels.”
12This is what the LORD says: “As the shepherd snatches from the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear, so the Israelites dwelling in Samaria will be rescued having just the corner of a bed or the cushion of a couch.
13Hear and testify against the house of Jacob, declares the Lord GOD, the God of Hosts.
14On the day I punish Israel for their transgressions, I will visit destruction on the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the ground.
15I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses of ivory will also perish, and the great houses will come to an end,” declares the LORD.

Ashdod and Egypt are called to look at Samaria from its surrounding mountains. They will see unrest and oppression in the city. The LORD says its people do not know how to do right; they store up violence and destruction in their citadels.
An enemy will surround the land, pull down the strongholds, and plunder those citadels. Amos compares what remains to the scraps a shepherd snatches from a lion’s mouth—two legs or a piece of an ear. The Israelites in Samaria will be rescued with only a bed corner or a couch cushion. Their comfortable surroundings will not withstand the judgment.
The LORD calls for testimony against Jacob’s house. When He punishes Israel, Bethel’s altars will be destroyed and their horns cut off. Winter houses, summer houses, ivory houses, and great houses will all come to an end.
The accusation concerns what has been stored inside those impressive places. Oppression is visible to outside witnesses, and neither luxurious houses nor religious altars can protect the city from the LORD’s response.

When you discover that something you enjoy was gained unfairly, take that knowledge seriously. Pay what you owe, return what is not yours, or correct a dishonest agreement. Protecting the appearance of success is less important than putting a known wrong right.
Prayer
God who sees oppression, open our eyes to the people affected by our comfort. Bring down false security, protect the vulnerable, and make our homes places where justice is practiced rather than hidden. Amen.
