Amos 7:10-17
Go, Prophesy
10Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words,
11for this is what Amos has said: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’”
12And Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer! Flee to the land of Judah; earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.
13But never prophesy at Bethel again, because it is the sanctuary of the king and the temple of the kingdom.”
14“I was not a prophet,” Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a herdsman and a tender of sycamore-fig trees.
15But the LORD took me from following the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’
16Now, therefore, hear the word of the LORD. You say: ‘Do not prophesy against Israel; do not preach against the house of Isaac.’
17Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be divided by a measuring line, and you yourself will die on pagan soil. And Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’”

Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sends word to Jeroboam king of Israel. He says Amos is conspiring against the king and that the land cannot bear his words. The priest treats a warning from God as a political threat.
Amaziah tells Amos to leave Bethel, go back to Judah, earn his bread there, and prophesy there. He says Bethel is the king's sanctuary and a royal temple. In other words, Amos's message is not welcome in the place where religious authority and royal power have joined together.
Amos answers without pretending to belong to a prophetic institution. He was not a prophet or the son of a prophet. He was a herdsman and a tender of sycamore-fig trees. The LORD took him from following the flock and said, “Go, prophesy to My people Israel.”
“I was not a prophet,” Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a herdsman and a tender of sycamore-fig trees.
The authority of Amos's message does not come from a career title. It comes from the LORD who sent him. That does not mean every person who claims to speak for God should be trusted. Amos's message must be tested by the word God has given and by its agreement with the character of His justice.
Amaziah's attempt to silence the prophet also brings a personal word of judgment. His wife, children, land, and future will be affected by the collapse coming on Israel. The priest who defended the king's sanctuary will see that the sanctuary cannot save the kingdom.
Elijah was once accused of troubling Israel, but he answered that Ahab and his family had done so by abandoning the LORD's commands. Jeremiah describes God's word as a fire he cannot hold in. Scripture recognizes the cost of speaking faithfully when an influential institution would rather remain undisturbed.
Faithful speech is not the same as harsh speech. Amos speaks because God has sent him, and his message is aimed at repentance and truth rather than personal fame.
How We Know
In 1 Kings 18:17-18, Ahab calls Elijah the troubler of Israel, but Elijah identifies the king's abandonment of God's commands as the real trouble. Jeremiah 20:7-9 describes the pressure of carrying a word that cannot be suppressed. Amos likewise speaks under divine commission despite opposition from religious authority.
