In Him All Things Hold Together

15The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
16For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him.
17He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
18And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence.
19For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him,
20and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross.

The Son makes the invisible God known. Paul calls Him the image of God and the firstborn over all creation, giving Him the place of supremacy. He is not one created being among others: all things were created in Him, through Him and for Him.
The scope includes heaven and earth, what we can see and what we cannot. Thrones, dominions, rulers and authorities all owe their existence to Him. He is before all things, and all things continue to hold together in Him.
The same Lord is the head of the church, His body. He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, supreme in resurrection life as well as creation. Paul states the purpose plainly: Christ is to have first place in everything.
God was pleased for all His fullness to dwell in the Son and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself. The peace is made through the blood of Christ's cross. The One who sustains creation is also the One through whose death God deals with its alienation.
Paul's vision stretches from creation to reconciliation. Every power stands beneath Christ, and the church receives its life from Him. His greatness and His costly work of peace belong to the same Lord whom believers trust.

What This Means for Us
A threatening authority can seem larger than everything else in our lives. This passage places every authority beneath Christ. We can face a powerful person or a frightening situation while remembering that neither stands outside His rule.
Our trust rests in a Lord who made peace at the cost of His own blood. His greatness does not make Him distant from our need. We can bring that need to the One who both sustains creation and gave Himself at the cross.

Lord Jesus, all things were made through You and for You. Thank You for making peace through Your cross. Give us faith in Your rule and gratitude for Your costly love. Amen.
