1Masters, supply your slaves with what is right and fair, since you know that you also have a Master in heaven.
2Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful,
3as you pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.
4Pray that I may declare it clearly, as I should.
5Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time.
6Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Paul completes his household instructions by addressing masters. They must provide what is right and fair for their slaves because they too have a Master in heaven. Their earthly authority never puts them beyond His judgment.
He then calls the whole church to devoted, watchful and thankful prayer. They are to pray for him as well, asking God to open a door for the word so that he can proclaim the mystery of Christ. He is in chains for that message and asks for help to declare it clearly.
Paul's need reminds the church that gospel work depends on God. Even an apostle asks others to pray for opportunity and faithful speech.
The believers must also act wisely toward people outside the church, making good use of the time they have. Their words should always be gracious and seasoned with salt: speech that is fitting, thoughtful and worth hearing. They need to know how to answer each person well.
Prayer, conduct and conversation belong together. God opens opportunities, and His people are to meet them with wise behavior and gracious words that make Christ known clearly.

When a person asks about your faith, listen to what they actually want to know. A clear, kind answer is more useful than a prepared speech that misses the question. If you do not know, say so and offer to look at Scripture together.
Prayer
Father, open doors for Your word and give Your servants clarity. Make our conduct wise and our speech gracious, and help us listen carefully to the people You place before us. Amen.
