Sow Your Seed

The Teacher tells people to cast their bread upon the waters because after many days they may find it again. He says to divide a portion among seven or even eight because no one knows what disaster may come upon the land.

These sayings encourage generosity, wise distribution, and action in the face of uncertainty. They are not a promise that every investment will return or that every generous act will produce visible success. The Teacher's point is that uncertainty should not become an excuse for doing nothing.

Clouds full of rain eventually pour it out. A fallen tree stays where it falls. A person who watches the wind will never sow, and one who studies every cloud will never reap. Waiting for perfect conditions can become a permanent refusal to begin.

The Teacher acknowledges that people do not know the path of the wind or how life is formed in a mother's womb. They cannot understand all God's work. Yet he still says to sow in the morning and not fold up the hands in the evening. Work faithfully while accepting that the outcome is not yours to command.

Light is sweet, and it is good to see the sun. A person should rejoice through many years while remembering that days of darkness will also come. Young people are told to enjoy youth, follow the ways of their hearts and eyes, and remember that God will bring all these things into judgment.

Proverbs praises generous people who refresh others. Paul tells the Corinthians that whoever sows generously will reap generously and that God supplies seed and bread. Ecclesiastes joins generosity and diligence to sober uncertainty.

Families can teach children to act wisely without demanding guarantees. Share what you can, begin good work, accept limits, enjoy youth without forgetting judgment, and leave the harvest with God.
