But God Makes Us Alive
1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
2in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.
3All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.
4But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!
6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
7in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
8For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9not by works, so that no one can boast.
10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.

Paul does not soften the condition from which God saves us. He says people were dead in trespasses and sins, following the ways of the world and the ruler of the power of the air. This death is not a description of people who have no intelligence or ordinary human goodness. It is separation from the life of God and captivity to rebellion.
He includes himself and his fellow Jews in the same diagnosis. All of them once lived in the cravings of the flesh and followed its desires and thoughts. No family can use this passage to divide the world into respectable sinners and obvious sinners. The need for mercy reaches everyone.
Then come two of the most important words in the letter: but God. Because of His great love, God made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in trespasses. He raised us with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms. Salvation is God's work of mercy before it is our record of improvement.
Paul repeats the point so nobody mistakes the source. Paul grounds salvation in grace received through faith, not in anything we can present as an achievement. God gives this rescue, and the result is a life of good works prepared for His people. Yet grace does not leave people directionless. We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works that God prepared for us to walk in.
How We Know
The passage connects God's life-giving action to the resurrection power already described in chapter 1. God raised Christ from the dead, and here He makes those who were dead in sins alive with Christ and raises them with Him.
The rest of the chapter explains what that new life looks like in community. Those once far away are brought near by Christ's blood, have access to the Father through one Spirit, and are being built together into a dwelling place for God. Grace produces a people, not only a private rescue.
