Ephesians 4:7-16
Gifts for Building the Body
7Now to each one of us grace has been given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8This is why it says: “When He ascended on high, He led captives away, and gave gifts to men.”
9What does “He ascended” mean, except that He also descended to the lower parts of the earth?
10He who descended is the very One who ascended above all the heavens, in order to fill all things.
11And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
12to equip the saints for works of ministry and to build up the body of Christ,
13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ.
14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming.
15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head.
16From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part.

Paul has spoken about what the church shares; now he speaks about the grace given to each believer. To each one grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift. Unity does not require sameness. The one Lord gives different people different work and different capacities.
Paul connects Christ's ascent with His giving gifts to His people. He names apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors and teachers. These leaders are not handed status for personal display. They are given to equip the saints for works of ministry and to build up the body of Christ.
The goal is maturity: all believers attaining the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, growing into the full stature of Christ. Paul does not picture a church where a few experts do all the serving while everyone else remains dependent and passive.
Without maturity, people are like infants tossed about by waves and carried around by every wind of teaching, by human cunning and craftiness. Truth matters because people can be manipulated. But the answer is not harshness. Speaking the truth in love, believers are to grow up into Christ, who is the head.
From Christ the whole body grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work. The image is not of a platform with an audience. It is a living body in which every part contributes to health, connection, and growth.
