The Armor of God

Paul's closing battle image begins with a command to be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Believers are not told to manufacture courage from their own willpower. They are told to draw strength from the Lord and to put on the full armor of God.

The reason is that the struggle is not against flesh and blood. Paul names rulers, authorities, powers of this world's darkness, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. He is not giving permission to treat difficult people as demons or to turn every disagreement into spiritual warfare. The passage identifies a spiritual dimension without erasing human responsibility and complexity.

The armor includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Each image gives a way of standing: truth held close, righteousness practiced, peace carried, faith raised, salvation guarded, and Scripture spoken.

Paul repeats the word stand. The picture is not a promise that Christians will attack every person who disagrees with them. It is a call to remain faithful when evil pressures them to lie, despair, divide, or surrender their allegiance to Christ.

Prayer runs through the whole armor. Believers are to pray in the Spirit on all occasions, staying alert and persevering in prayer for all the saints. Spiritual readiness is therefore dependent, watchful, and communal.
