Ezekiel 15:1-8
A Useless Vine
1Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2“Son of man, how does the wood of the vine surpass any other branch among the trees in the forest?
3Can wood be taken from it to make something useful? Or can one make from it a peg on which to hang utensils?
4No, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire devours both ends, and the middle is charred. Can it be useful for anything?
5Even when it was whole, it could not be made useful. How much less can it ever be useful when the fire has consumed it and charred it!
6Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give up the people of Jerusalem.
7And I will set My face against them. Though they may have escaped the fire, yet another fire will consume them. And when I set My face against them, you will know that I am the LORD.
8Thus I will make the land desolate, because they have acted unfaithfully,’ declares the Lord GOD.”

The LORD asks Ezekiel what makes the wood of a vine better than the wood of any other tree. Can its wood be used to make a peg or a vessel? Even before it is burned, it is less useful for construction than ordinary timber.
Once both ends have been burned and the middle is charred, it is even less useful. People may take a piece from the fire, but it cannot carry a meaningful load or become a tool for which strong wood is needed.
Jerusalem is compared to this vine. Its special status has not made it fruitful for the purpose God gave it. The city has become like wood placed in the fire because of its unfaithfulness, and its inhabitants will know that the LORD has acted against them.
The image is not an attack on vines or a statement that God discards people casually. It confronts the presumption that belonging to God's people, without the fruit of faithfulness, provides automatic protection.

God's warning is meant to break false confidence, not to make us despair. Ask where your household's faith is producing real good and where it has become only an identity we claim.
Prayer
LORD, keep our faith from becoming an empty name. Make our lives useful for mercy, truth, and service, and correct the false confidence that assumes belonging is enough without obedience. Amen.
