The Prophets Stand Beside Them

1Later, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them.
2Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak rose up and began to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, helping them.
3At that time Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates went to the Jews and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
4They also asked, “What are the names of the men who are constructing this building?”
5But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, so that they were not stopped until a report was sent to Darius and written instructions about this matter were returned.

The temple work has been stopped, but God sends prophets to call His people back to it. Haggai and Zechariah speak to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel. Then Zerubbabel and Jeshua rise and begin rebuilding again.
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak rose up and began to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, helping them.
The prophets remain with the builders and help them. Ezra does not describe their tasks, but he makes their ministry part of the renewed work.
Tattenai, the regional governor, asks who authorized the project and asks for the builders' names. His questions are serious, and the text does not tell the Jews to hide. But it also says that the eye of their God was on the elders, so the officials did not stop them while a report went to Darius.
God's attention does not remove every question. It gives the people enough freedom to keep working while the question is investigated.
How We Know
Haggai 1:1–15 dates the rebuilding call to Darius's second year, names Zerubbabel and Joshua, and records the LORD stirring the people to resume work. Zechariah 1:1 dates his opening message to the same year. These details place the prophets Ezra names within the temple's rebuilding, and Haggai lets us read the call to obedience behind Ezra's brief summary.
