God Will Provide the Lamb

1Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered.
2“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
3So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
5“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.”
6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together.
7Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together.
9When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood.
10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
11Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
12“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
13Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
14And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

After these things, God tests Abraham. God calls his name, and Abraham answers, “Here I am.” God tells him to take Isaac, his only son, whom he loves, and go to the land of Moriah to offer him as a burnt offering on a mountain God will show him.
Abraham rises early, saddles his donkey, takes two servants and Isaac, cuts wood, and travels for three days. He sees the place from a distance and tells the servants to stay with the donkey while he and Isaac go to worship. Abraham says they will return, though the command has placed the promised son in terrible danger.
Isaac carries the wood. Abraham carries the fire and the knife. Isaac notices that there is no lamb for the offering and asks his father about it. Abraham answers that God will provide the lamb. The two walk on together.
At the mountain, Abraham builds an altar, arranges the wood, binds Isaac, and lays him on the altar. The scene is deeply disturbing. The text is not a permission slip for parents to harm children, and no one should imitate Abraham's action. God's command in this unique test is not a general rule; the narrative's decisive turn will show God stopping the sacrifice.
Abraham reaches out his hand for the knife, but the angel of the LORD calls to him from heaven. Abraham answers, “Here I am.” He is told not to lay a hand on the boy. Abraham looks up and sees a ram caught by its horns. He offers the ram in Isaac's place and names the place “The LORD Will Provide.” The angel says that Abraham has shown his fear of God by not withholding his son. Yet Isaac lives because God stops the sacrifice and supplies another offering. Abraham has trusted the giver of the promise with the son through whom it will continue.
How We Know
Hebrews 11:17–19 explains that Abraham trusted God's promise that his offspring would be reckoned through Isaac. He reasoned that God could raise the dead, and Hebrews describes receiving Isaac back as a figurative resurrection. This explains the faith behind Abraham's words that both he and the boy would return; it does not say Isaac actually died.

What This Means for Us

This particular test gives no parent or religious leader permission to harm a child. God commands Abraham to stop and supplies the ram. If someone invokes this story to demand harm, seek protection and trustworthy help. The promise and the provision belong to God; they cannot be turned into a tool for another person's control.
Prayer
God who provides and protects, keep children and vulnerable people safe from every form of spiritualized harm. Give us discernment when a command sounds religious but leads toward violence. Help us trust your care, receive the way of escape you provide, and never call cruelty obedience. Amen.
