Rachel Dies on the Road

Jacob and his household leave Bethel. Rachel goes into labor, and the delivery is hard. The midwife tells her not to be afraid because she has another son. Rachel is dying, and with her last breath she names the child Ben-oni, “son of my sorrow.” Jacob names him Benjamin, “son of the right hand.” The two names preserve both the pain of Rachel's death and the child's continuing place in the family.

Rachel is buried on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. Jacob sets up a pillar over her grave. The family does not pass through this loss without marking it. A mother dies, a child survives, and a father gives the child another name while carrying grief on the road.

The story then says that Israel moves on and pitches his tent beyond Migdal-eder. Reuben sleeps with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Israel hears of it. The verse is brief, but the act violates a family relationship and abuses a woman who has less power. The text records it without approving it, and the later story will show that Reuben's action damages his standing.

The passage lists Jacob's twelve sons, born through Leah, Rachel, Bilhah, and Zilpah. They are the sons who will become the tribes of Israel. The list comes after death and betrayal, reminding us that a family's future can grow out of a history that contains love, exploitation, grief, and failure.

Isaac dies at one hundred eighty years. Esau and Jacob bury him together. Another burial brings two estranged brothers into the same place, even when their families remain complicated.
