5Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
6But he must ask in faith, without doubting, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
7That man should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
8He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

When believers lack wisdom, James tells them to ask God. This follows his instruction about trials and maturity: we need God's help to live faithfully when we do not know what to do.
God gives generously and without finding fault. Needing wisdom is a reason to come to Him, not a reason to hide. James's promise directs attention to the character of the Giver. We may ask because He is willing to give.
The request must be made in faith. James pictures the doubter as a wave driven about by the wind, and calls him double-minded and unstable. This is divided trust: asking God while remaining unwilling to rely on Him. Such a person should not expect to receive from the Lord.
Faith does not require having every answer before praying. It turns to God as trustworthy and seeks His wisdom with a willingness to follow it. Careful thought, counsel and responsible planning can serve that trust. James challenges the divided heart that wants God's help while refusing His authority. His warning calls us to wholehearted dependence on the generous God he has just described.
