Patient Until the Rains

7Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains.
8You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.
9Do not complain about one another, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door!
10Brothers, as an example of patience in affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
11See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

James turns from the judgment of oppressors to the patience of believers. They are to wait for the Lord's coming and strengthen their hearts. The coming Lord, not the present power of those who harm them, determines their final hope.
The farmer waits for the precious crop and the seasonal rains. He cannot force the harvest to arrive on demand. James uses that waiting to encourage believers to remain faithful while the promised outcome is still ahead.
Waiting must also affect how believers treat one another. They are not to grumble against each other, because the Judge is near. Suffering does not make it harmless to turn against fellow believers.
The prophets and Job provide examples of endurance in affliction. James directs attention to the outcome the Lord brought and to His compassion and mercy. God did not abandon Job, even during suffering Job could not explain. His story gives us reason to trust God's character, without promising that every believer will receive the same earthly outcome. Patience rests in the Lord who is coming and whose mercy can be trusted.
