I Would Find Him

1Then Job answered:
2“Even today my complaint is bitter. His hand is heavy despite my groaning.
3If only I knew where to find Him, so that I could go to His seat.
4I would plead my case before Him and fill my mouth with arguments.
5I would learn how He would answer, and consider what He would say.
6Would He contend with me in His great power? No, He would certainly take note of me.
7Then an upright man could reason with Him, and I would be delivered forever from my Judge.
8If I go east, He is not there, and if I go west, I cannot find Him.
9When He is at work in the north, I cannot behold Him; when He turns to the south, I cannot see Him.
10Yet He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
11My feet have followed in His tracks; I have kept His way without turning aside.
12I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily bread.
13But He is unchangeable, and who can oppose Him? He does what He desires.
14For He carries out His decree against me, and He has many such plans.
15Therefore I am terrified in His presence; when I consider this, I fear Him.
16God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me.
17Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.

Job says his complaint is bitter and that God’s hand remains heavy despite his groaning. He wishes he knew where to find God so he could go to His seat, lay out his case, and hear the words of God's answer.
Job believes that an upright person could reason with God and be delivered forever from his Judge. He searches east, west, north, and south but cannot perceive God. The absence he feels is not proof that God is absent; it is the painful experience of someone who cannot find the hearing he seeks.
Still, Job says God knows the way he takes, and when God has tested him, he will come forth as gold. He says he has stayed on God’s path and treasured His words more than daily bread. The gold image expresses his confidence that examination will reveal his integrity, not a promise that he will become wealthy. This confidence is not an easy triumph. It stands beside the fear that God has hidden Himself and cannot be forced to appear.
Job says that when God determines something, who can turn Him back? God’s unchangeable purpose terrifies him: Job cannot overturn what God decides. Yet darkness has not silenced him. He keeps speaking to the God whose ways he cannot trace.

When prayer feels unanswered, return to a passage you know rather than demanding a new explanation from yourself. Read it slowly, ask God for help, and let someone trustworthy know that you are struggling. Seeking Him need not sound confident to be sincere.
Prayer
LORD, meet those who seek You and find only silence. Give them endurance without shame, companions who understand spiritual dryness, and enough assurance to keep walking when Your presence feels hidden. Amen.
