The Spirit Convicts the World

1“I have told you these things so that you will not fall away.
2They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
3They will do these things because they have not known the Father or Me.
4But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
5Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
6Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.
7But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
8And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
9in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

Jesus warns the disciples that people will expel them from synagogues and may even kill them while thinking they serve God. He tells them in advance so that, when it happens, they will remember His words and not fall away. Religious certainty does not make the persecutors right. Jesus says they act this way because they do not know Him or the Father.
The disciples are filled with sorrow about His departure. Jesus tells them it is for their benefit that He goes, because He will send the Advocate. They will lose His visible presence, but they will not be left to make His truth known by their own strength.
Jesus names the Spirit's work in regard to sin, righteousness, and judgment, and He gives a reason for each. The world's sin is exposed in its refusal to believe in Him. Righteousness is connected with His return to the Father: the One the world rejects is received by the Father. Judgment is shown in the condemnation of the world's ruler. Evil will not have the final verdict on Jesus.
These words change how the disciples can understand the hostility ahead. Their opponents may claim authority to condemn them, but the Spirit will expose the truth about the One they follow. They do not need to overpower people to make Him true. They need to remain faithful to Him and depend on the Advocate He sends.
