Jesus Knows What Is in a Person

23While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the signs He was doing and believed in His name.
24But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew them all.
25He did not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man.

At the Passover Feast in Jerusalem, many people see Jesus' signs and believe in His name. Then John gives us an unexpected sentence: Jesus does not entrust Himself to them. Their response to Him and His response to them are different.
John explains why. Jesus knows them all and needs no one to tell Him what is in a person. He can see what a crowd's enthusiasm leaves hidden. The passage does not give a separate account of each person's motives, but it makes us pause before treating an impressive response as the whole story of faith.
Jesus' knowledge also sets Him apart from everyone around Him. Other people need testimony, time, and evidence to understand one another; He knows what is within. We cannot gain His trust by managing what He sees. The One who performs the signs also sees the people watching them.

His knowledge gives us no license to claim we know someone else's heart. Within a household, listen before drawing conclusions, and make room for honest confession without using it to humiliate the person who speaks.

Father, you know us more truly than we know ourselves. Make us honest without making us harsh, willing to obey what we understand, and ready to begin again when we fail. Amen.
