God Loved the World

16For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.
18Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
19And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.
20Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
21But whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen clearly that what he has done has been accomplished in God.”

God loves the world in this way: He gives His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. The gift is costly, personal, and offered to the world rather than to one favored group.
God sent His Son to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned. That is an assurance to rest in, not a reward for having no past to be ashamed of. Yet the passage also says that whoever does not believe is already condemned. The offer of life does not make the response to God's Son unimportant.
The judgment is that light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their works were evil. Everyone who does wicked things hates the light and avoids it, afraid that his works will be exposed.
The person who practices truth comes to the light so that God's work can be seen. This person does not step forward to claim an independent goodness that earned salvation. Verse 21 says that what he has done has been accomplished in God. The life God gives begins to show in a willingness to live truthfully before Him.

What This Means for Us
God's love gives us a reason to stop hiding. The Son was sent to save, and those who trust Him are not condemned. When we admit a wrong, we can seek forgiveness and make amends without trying to conceal everything that would spoil a good impression.
Let that same grace shape how we hear another person's confession. Take the wrong seriously, help with the repair, and resist keeping it ready to use against them in the next argument.
Prayer
God, thank You for loving the world by giving Your Son. Bring our household into the light, free us from hiding, and make our response to grace truthful, repentant, and compassionate. Amen.
