The One Who Comes from Above

31The One who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks as one from the earth. The One who comes from heaven is above all.
32He testifies to what He has seen and heard, yet no one accepts His testimony.
33Whoever accepts His testimony has certified that God is truthful.
34For the One whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.
35The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in His hands.
36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.”

The One who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. Jesus comes from heaven and bears witness to what He has seen and heard, but no one receives His testimony.
Whoever receives His testimony sets his seal to this: God is true. The One God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without measure.
The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever refuses to obey the Son will not see life, but God's wrath remains on him.
The passage does not leave Jesus as one voice among many competing opinions. His words come from above, carry the Father's truth, and demand a response of belief and obedience.
Notice the promise's present tense: whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. The Father has placed all things in His hands, so the person trusting Him is not depending on a witness who might prove unable to help. The same authority makes rejecting Him serious. Life is found in the Son, and refusing Him leaves God's wrath in place.

Prayer
Father, make us receive the testimony of Your Son as truth. Give our household obedient faith, humility before heavenly wisdom, and compassion for people who have not yet believed. Amen.
