The Son Gives Life

19So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
20The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these.
21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes.
22Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son,
23so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
24Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.
25Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
26For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.
27And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
28Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice
29and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
30I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Jesus tells the leaders that the Son can do nothing from Himself, but only what He sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. The Father loves the Son and shows Him all that He Himself is doing.
The Father raises the dead and gives them life, and the Son gives life to whom He will. The Father judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, so that everyone may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.
Whoever hears Jesus' word and believes the One who sent Him has eternal life. That person does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life. The hour is coming when the dead will hear the Son's voice and come out of their tombs.
Jesus says He can do nothing on His own authority. He judges as He hears, and His judgment is just because He seeks the will of the Father who sent Him rather than His own will.
When Jesus says He can do nothing by Himself, He is not withdrawing His claim to divine authority. He also says He does whatever the Father does, gives life to whom He wishes, and is to receive the same honor as the Father. He acts in complete unity with Him. To reject the Son while claiming to honor the Father is to misunderstand both.
Jesus speaks of life already given and of a resurrection still to come. The believer has crossed from death to life now. Then verses 28–29 look ahead to all who are in their graves hearing His voice and rising, some to life and some to judgment. Our deeds matter before this Judge, but verse 24 gives the ground of assurance: hearing His word and believing the One who sent Him. A changed life bears the fruit of His gift; it does not buy our way across from death.

What This Means for Us
Jesus' authority is not independent rebellion; He acts in unity with the Father. Christian faith therefore honors the Son not merely as a wise teacher but as the giver of life and judge.
The promise of verse 24 gives us something to hold onto when we fear death or God's judgment. We can hear Christ's word and trust the Father who sent Him. That assurance also frees us to obey without trying to earn a verdict Jesus has already promised to those who believe.
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving life and judgment to Your Son. Help our household hear Jesus' word, honor Him truly, and live now as people who have passed from death to life. Amen.
