Leaders Divided over Jesus

45Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
46“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.
47“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.
48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
49But this crowd that does not know the law—they are under a curse.”
50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,
51“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”
52“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”
53Then each went to his own home.

The officers return to the chief priests and Pharisees without Jesus. The leaders ask why they did not bring Him. The officers answer that no one ever spoke like this man.
The Pharisees reply that none of the rulers or Pharisees has believed, but the crowd that does not know the law is accursed. Their confidence rests on dismissing ordinary people rather than listening to the testimony of the officers.
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, asks whether their law judges a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does. They answer with a regional insult, asking whether he is from Galilee too, and challenge him to search the Scriptures.
The meeting ends with each person going to his own house. The leaders have Scripture and authority, but they use both to protect a verdict already formed. Nicodemus's modest question exposes what their certainty has avoided.

God of justice, keep our household from using knowledge or status to dismiss people. Give us patience to hear evidence, courage to ask fair questions, and humility when Jesus' words unsettle our certainty. Amen.
