The Light of the World

12Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid.”
14Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.
15You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
16But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father who sent Me.
17Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
18I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”
19“Where is Your Father?” they asked Him. “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father as well.”
20He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.

Jesus speaks again to the people and says, “I am the light of the world.” Whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
The Pharisees challenge Him because He bears witness about Himself. Jesus answers that He knows where He came from and where He is going, while they judge according to the flesh. He says His judgment is true because He is not alone; the Father who sent Him is with Him.
Their law requires the testimony of two people. Jesus says He bears witness about Himself, and the Father who sent Him bears witness about Him. They ask where His Father is, showing that they do not understand the Father through whom Jesus speaks.
Jesus says that if they knew Him, they would know the Father also. He teaches these things in the temple treasury, and no one arrests Him because His hour has not yet come.
The promise of light belongs with this claim to know and reveal the Father. Jesus is not offering an inspiring thought to carry away from the temple. He calls people to follow Him. Those who do will have the light of life because the One guiding them knows the Father and can be trusted to speak the truth.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, be the light of our household. Expose what needs repentance, guide our judgments beyond appearances, and keep us close to the Father whose truth and presence You reveal. Amen.
