Jude 1:1-4

Contend for the Faith

Read the passage

1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who are called, loved by God the Father, and kept in Jesus Christ:

2Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

3Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints.

4For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Berean Standard Bible

Read aloud

Jude introduces himself as a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James. He writes to people who are called, loved by the Father and kept in Jesus Christ. Before addressing the danger among them, he reminds them of God’s care and asks that mercy, peace and love be multiplied to them.

He had wanted to write about the salvation they share, but found it necessary to urge them to contend earnestly for the faith. This faith has been entrusted once for all to God’s people. They are to defend the truth they have received, not replace it with a message that suits new desires.

The danger has arisen within the community. Ungodly people have slipped in unnoticed, and Jude says their condemnation was designated long ago. They turn God’s grace into permission for immorality and deny their only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Grace cannot rightly be used to excuse rejection of the Lord who gives it. A teaching may sound generous while encouraging people to disobey Him. Jude calls the church to recognize and resist that deception.

Being kept by Christ does not make vigilance unnecessary. God’s beloved people are the very ones Jude urges to contend. They can take that responsibility seriously while depending on the Savior who holds them.

What This Means for Us

When someone uses grace to excuse conduct Christ forbids, challenge the claim with Scripture. Mercy for sinners calls us back to the Lord; it does not remove His authority.

Depend on Christ as you defend the truth. You are not keeping the faith alive by your strength alone, and you need not answer deception with pride or cruelty.

Prayer

Father, thank You for calling us, loving us and keeping us in Jesus Christ. Help us defend the faith You have entrusted to Your people. Keep us from using grace to excuse sin, and make us faithful to our Lord. Amen.
