19You, O LORD, reign forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation.
20Why have You forgotten us forever? Why have You forsaken us for so long?
21Restore us to Yourself, O LORD, so we may return; renew our days as of old,
22unless You have utterly rejected us and remain angry with us beyond measure.

After naming the desolation of Mount Zion, the people confess that the LORD reigns forever. His throne endures from generation to generation. The city has fallen, but His reign has not.
Then they ask why He has forgotten them and forsaken them for so long. Confidence and complaint remain together: they know who reigns, yet they cannot explain why their suffering continues. They bring that question to Him.
They ask the LORD to restore them to Himself so they may return. Even their return depends on His restoring work. They want renewed days, but their deepest need is to belong near Him again.
The final line leaves the plea under a terrible fear: “unless You have utterly rejected us and remain angry with us beyond measure.” No account of rebuilding follows. The book ends with the people still addressing God, asking Him to do what they cannot do for themselves. A family whose grief remains unresolved can pray these words without pretending recovery has already come.
