Martha and Mary Welcome Jesus

38As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.
39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message.
40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”
41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things.
42But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Martha welcomes Jesus into her home. While she works on the preparations, her sister Mary sits at the Lord's feet and listens to his message. The sisters are in the same house with the same guest, but Martha's attention is being pulled in many directions.
She comes to Jesus with a complaint: doesn't he care that Mary has left her to serve alone? She asks him to tell Mary to help. Her welcome has become an occasion for worry and frustration, and she wants Jesus to put things right by moving her sister away from his teaching.
Jesus answers Martha by name. She is worried and upset about many things, he says, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken from her. He protects her place as someone who receives his word.
Martha has opened her home to Jesus, but she also needs what he has come to give. His presence cannot be reduced to another set of tasks to complete. Mary is listening because the Lord has something to say. Service has its place, but even service offered to him can crowd out the attention he deserves.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, receive our service and quiet our anxious striving. Teach our household to listen before we rush, to serve without resentment, and to make room for the better portion of attention to You. Amen.
