Jesus Among the Teachers

41Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.
42And when He was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the Feast.
43When those days were over and they were returning home, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware He had stayed.
44Assuming He was in their company, they traveled on for a day before they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends.
45When they could not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for Him.
46Finally, after three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
47And all who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers.
48When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. “Child, why have You done this to us?” His mother asked. “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.”
49“Why were you looking for Me?” He asked. “Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?”
50But they did not understand the statement He was making to them.
51Then He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But His mother treasured up all these things in her heart.
52And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Every year Jesus' parents go to Jerusalem for the Passover. When He is twelve, Jesus remains behind after the feast without His parents knowing. They begin the journey home with relatives and friends, assuming He is in the group.
After a day's travel, Mary and Joseph search for Him among their companions. They return to Jerusalem and find Him after three days in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions. Everyone who hears Him is amazed at His understanding.
Mary asks why He has treated them this way and tells Him how anxiously they have searched. Jesus answers that He must be in His Father's house. Mary has just spoken of Joseph as His father; Jesus speaks of God as His Father. His answer reveals a relationship and calling that His parents do not yet understand. It does not make their anxious search unimportant.
Jesus returns to Nazareth and submits to them. Mary treasures these things, and Jesus grows in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and people. The scene holds together His unique identity and His ordinary obedience within a family.

Jesus' obedience to His heavenly Father does not cancel ordinary family responsibility. A household can encourage children to seek God seriously while also teaching them to communicate, honor trust, and accept appropriate authority.
Prayer
Father, make our homes places where questions and obedience can live together. Give parents patience when they are afraid, children wisdom as they grow, and every generation a deeper desire to know Your ways. Amen.
