Darkness over the Land

44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.
45The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.
46Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.
47When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.”
48And when all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts.
49But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things.

Darkness covers the land from about the sixth hour until the ninth. The sun is darkened, and the temple curtain tears down the middle. Luke records these events as Jesus' death approaches.
Jesus calls out loudly, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” Then he breathes his last. His final prayer echoes Psalm 31:5. The suffering has not silenced his trust in the Father; he gives himself into the Father's hands as he dies.
The centurion sees what has happened and gives glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.” People who gathered to watch return home beating their breasts. Those who knew Jesus, including the women who followed him from Galilee, remain at a distance watching. His death is real, and it leaves witnesses grieving and shaken.
The torn curtain also points beyond their sorrow. Hebrews 10:19–22 explains that Jesus' blood opens the way for his people to draw near to God. The righteous one has died, and sinners are given access through his sacrifice. We can mourn the wrong done to him while thanking the Father for the mercy made available through him.
