A Lamp on a Stand

16No one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he sets it on a stand, so those who enter can see the light.
17For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.
18Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
19Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him, but they were unable to reach Him because of the crowd.
20He was told, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.”
21But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”

Jesus says no one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. A lamp is put on a stand so that those who enter may see the light.
Nothing hidden will remain concealed; it will be disclosed and brought to light. Jesus tells His hearers to take care how they listen. The person who has will receive more, but the one who does not have will lose even what he thinks he has. Hearing without responding can leave someone confident of possessing a truth that has never taken hold in their life.
Jesus' mother and brothers come to see Him, but they cannot reach Him because of the crowd. Someone tells Him they are standing outside. Jesus answers that His mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and do it.
He is not insulting His family. He is describing the new family formed by faithful hearing and obedience. Biological relationship and public closeness do not replace response to God.
