Glory on the Mountain

28About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray.
29And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became radiantly white.
30Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus.
31They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
32Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him.
33As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
34While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
35And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to Him!”
36After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was present with them. The disciples kept this to themselves, and in those days they did not tell anyone what they had seen.

Luke places the mountain scene after Jesus' preceding teaching. Peter, John, and James go with Him to pray, and while Jesus is praying His appearance changes and His clothing becomes dazzling white.
Moses and Elijah appear in glory and speak with Jesus about His departure, which He is about to accomplish at Jerusalem. The law and the prophets stand with Him while the cross already lies ahead.
Peter and the others are heavy with sleep, but they become fully awake and see Jesus' glory. As Moses and Elijah are leaving, Peter suggests making three tents, not understanding what he is saying.
A cloud comes and overshadows them, and they are afraid. A voice from the cloud says, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to Him!” When the voice has spoken, Jesus is found alone. The disciples keep silent and tell no one what they have seen in those days.
Moses and Elijah share in this glorious scene, but the Father singles out Jesus as his Son. The disciples must listen to him—including what he has said about suffering. The glory they see does not cancel the journey to Jerusalem. It assures them that the one leading them there is the Father's chosen Son.
