Malachi 2:1-9
The Covenant of Levi
1“And now this decree is for you, O priests:
2If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to honor My name,” says the LORD of Hosts, “I will send a curse among you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already begun to curse them, because you are not taking it to heart.
3Behold, I will rebuke your descendants, and I will spread dung on your faces, the waste from your feasts, and you will be carried off with it.
4Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment so that My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD of Hosts.
5“My covenant with him was one of life and peace, which I gave to him; it called for reverence, and he revered Me and stood in awe of My name.
6True instruction was in his mouth, and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity.
7For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the LORD of Hosts.
8But you have departed from the way, and your instruction has caused many to stumble. You have violated the covenant of Levi,” says the LORD of Hosts.
9“So I in turn have made you despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not kept My ways, but have shown partiality in matters of the law.”

The previous accusation was that the priests offered what they did not value. Now God tells them what that failure will cost.
If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to honor My name, I will send a curse among you, and I will curse your blessings.
The language is shocking because the office is serious. God does not treat the priests as people who have been handed a small volunteer assignment. They carry His name in front of the people, and their carelessness teaches the people what to think of Him.
The next image is one nobody would put on a religious poster. God says He will spread the waste from their feasts on their faces and carry them away with it. The point is not shock for its own sake. The priests have taken what was meant to be holy and made it shameful. The image turns their public service into the public disgrace their work has earned.
But the rebuke does not stop at humiliation. God remembers the covenant with Levi. It was a covenant of life and peace. Levi revered God's name. True instruction was in his mouth, falsehood was absent from his lips, and he turned many away from iniquity.
That is what a priest's lips are for. Not impressing a crowd. Not winning every argument. Preserving knowledge so people can seek instruction and know which way to walk. The priest is called a messenger of the LORD of Hosts.
Then the contrast lands. “But you have departed from the way.” Their instruction has caused people to stumble, and they have shown partiality in matters of the law. The office has not become unimportant. It has become dangerous because the people trust the person speaking.
How We Know
Malachi's description of Levi reaches back to Moses' blessing. Deuteronomy 33:8-10 describes Levi as a tribe associated with teaching God's ordinances and law to Israel. Numbers 25:10-13 also records a covenant of peace connected with Phinehas, a descendant of Levi.
Those earlier passages do not make every priest faithful. They show the standard Malachi is invoking. Knowledge, reverence, and impartial instruction belong to the office, and the priests in Malachi are being judged against that calling.
