9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
10As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.
11And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
12At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness,
13and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.

Jesus comes from Nazareth and is baptized by John in the Jordan. As He comes out of the water, He sees the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.
The voice from heaven addresses Him directly: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” The Father identifies and delights in His Son. Alongside the Spirit’s descent, this is God’s testimony to who Jesus is before Mark tells the story of His public ministry.
The language recalls the royal Son in Psalm 2 and the chosen Servant in Isaiah 42, in whom God delights and on whom He puts His Spirit. Jesus’ baptism brings His identity and mission into view. The Father’s voice directs our attention to the Son He has sent.
At once the Spirit drives Him into the wilderness. For forty days He is tempted by Satan, among wild animals, and ministered to by angels. Mark gives no dialogue or list of temptations here. The Son beloved by His Father still faces real testing; the wilderness does not cancel the voice from heaven.
Hebrews later describes Jesus as tempted yet without sin and invites us to approach Him for mercy. His faithfulness is the foundation of that invitation. We receive the Father’s care through His Son, rather than assuming that every statement about Jesus applies to us in exactly the same way.
How We Know
Psalm 2 speaks of God’s Son in a royal setting. Isaiah 42 describes the Servant in whom God delights and on whom He places His Spirit. The heavenly declaration and the Spirit’s descent at Jesus’ baptism recall both passages, giving the scene both royal and servant imagery.

Romans speaks of believers receiving the Spirit of adoption and calling God Father. That is a gift received through Christ. Bring a particular temptation to Him and take the step that helps you obey, whether that means admitting a hidden struggle or leaving an opportunity to do wrong. His care gives us reason to ask, not a reason to pretend we are already strong.

Father, thank You for Your beloved Son and for receiving us through Him. Give us Your Spirit’s help in temptation. Keep our hope in Jesus’ faithfulness, and teach us to approach Him honestly for mercy. Amen.
