Walking Ahead of Them to Jerusalem

32As they were going up the road to Jerusalem, Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. Again Jesus took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him:
33“Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles,
34who will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise again.”

Jesus walks ahead as they go up to Jerusalem. The disciples are amazed, and those following are afraid. He takes the Twelve aside again and tells them what will happen to Him.
He names the city and the coming sequence. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, condemned to death and delivered to the Gentiles. They will mock, spit on, flog and kill Him. After three days He will rise.
His words are painfully specific. Yet He is walking toward the city where these things await Him. The coming suffering does not take Him unaware, and His announcement does not end with defeat.
This is the third prominent prediction of His suffering and resurrection in this part of Mark. The repeated teaching gives the disciples something to remember when the events become real. They are still learning what His mission requires, but He continues to explain it.
Before this becomes a lesson about our courage, it is good news about our Savior. He goes toward the suffering through which He will serve and give His life for many. The promise that He will rise belongs beside every hard detail. The One leading the way knows both the cost and the life beyond it.
