You Will Be Handed Over

9So be on your guard. You will be delivered over to the councils and beaten in the synagogues. On My account you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.
10And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all the nations.
11But when they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand what to say. Instead, speak whatever you are given at that time, for it will not be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
12Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.
13You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.

Following Jesus will bring His disciples before councils, governors and kings. They will be beaten and arrested on His account. Jesus tells them plainly that being His witnesses can be costly.
Yet the gospel will not be stopped by those who oppose it. It must be proclaimed to all nations, and even an appearance before a hostile ruler can become an occasion to testify about Him. Acts later shows the apostles continuing to proclaim Christ after a flogging, and Paul speaking before King Agrippa.
Jesus gives His disciples a particular assurance for the moment they are handed over: the Holy Spirit will supply what they are to say. They need not live in anxious rehearsal of every possible defense. Their witness will depend on God's help. This promise does not make learning Scripture or preparing to serve Him unnecessary.
The cost can reach into the closest relationships. Jesus speaks of relatives betraying one another to death. Micah had described enemies within a household too. Such words are painful, and we need not pretend otherwise. Jesus prepares His people for hostility rather than promising that faith will make every family relationship safe.
His final promise looks beyond that hostility: the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. Perseverance means continuing in faithfulness to Him. It is not a command to remain within an abuser's reach or a claim that we earn salvation through suffering. The Savior calls His people to hold fast, trusting His help and the salvation He promises.
How We Know
Acts 5:40–42 records the apostles being flogged and then continuing to proclaim Jesus. Acts 26:1–3 places Paul before King Agrippa. These accounts provide concrete examples of the suffering and witness Jesus describes here.

What This Means for Us
Remember a Christian facing hostility because of faith, whether someone you know or a person whose situation you have learned about responsibly. Pray for courage, wise help, protection and faithful witness. If there is a useful way to support them, consider it.
For our own fears, Jesus gives a promise of the Spirit's help, not a reason to be ashamed of needing support. We can learn His words now and ask Him to sustain us when speaking for Him becomes costly. He knows what His people face.
Prayer
Father, strengthen believers who face threats because they belong to Jesus. Give them protection, trustworthy help and words faithful to the gospel. By Your Spirit, keep us trusting Christ through opposition and looking toward His promised salvation. Amen.
