Go Into All the World

15And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
18they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be made well.”
19After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
20And they went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked through them, confirming His word by the signs that accompanied it.

Mark's longer ending closes with Jesus sending His followers to proclaim the gospel throughout the world. Some early manuscripts end at verse 8, so we read these words with the other accounts of His commission and ascension.
The news is for everyone. Jesus speaks of believing and being baptized, and warns that unbelief brings condemnation. Baptism belongs with the public response to the gospel; it is not a substitute for faith in the Savior. Matthew likewise records Jesus commanding His followers to make disciples, baptize and teach them to obey Him.
This passage also lists signs accompanying believers: deliverance from demons, new tongues, protection from snakes and poison, and healing. These statements must not become instructions to create danger or tests that every Christian must pass. When Paul survives a snakebite in Acts 28, he is gathering sticks for a fire, not trying to demonstrate his faith. Jesus Himself refused the devil's invitation to test God's protection by jumping from the temple.
Then the Lord Jesus is taken into heaven and sits at God's right hand. His followers go out preaching, and He works through them, confirming His word. Ascension does not mean He has ceased to care for His people or left the mission dependent on their strength alone.
The gospel they proclaim concerns the Savior who died and rose, the forgiveness He gives and the call to trust Him. The signs serve that message. Our attention belongs on the risen Lord and His good news, not on seeking danger or proving ourselves extraordinary.
How We Know
Matthew 28:18–20 commands disciple-making among all nations. Luke 24:46–49 joins Jesus' death and resurrection to the proclamation of repentance and forgiveness, and Acts 1:8–11 records worldwide witness and His ascension. The central mission and exaltation in this ending are also taught in those passages.

2 How should we understand the mention of faith and baptism?
AnswerThey belong together in the response to the gospel. Baptism does not replace trusting Jesus, and the warning against unbelief calls us to take His offer of salvation seriously.

What This Means for Us
Learn to explain the good news in ordinary words: Jesus died for our sins, rose again and calls us to repentance and faith. You do not need a dramatic story about yourself to speak truthfully about Him. Pray for someone who needs that news and for a fitting opportunity to share it.
Keep Scripture's commands and promises together. Trusting God never requires creating a danger to force Him to rescue you. We serve the risen Lord by obeying His word and caring for people, relying on His help as the message goes out.

Risen Lord, thank You for sending good news to the world and for working through Your people. Help us speak of You clearly, trust Your help and obey without testing You. Bring others to repentance and faith through the gospel. Amen.
