Standing Outside, Asking for Him

31Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came and stood outside. They sent someone in to summon Him,
32and a crowd was sitting around Him. “Look,” He was told, “Your mother and brothers are outside, asking for You.”
33But Jesus replied, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”
34Looking at those seated in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!
35For whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.”

Jesus’ mother and brothers stand outside the crowded house and send for Him. Earlier, His family had set out to take custody of Him. Now their message reaches the circle of people gathered around Him.
His answer gives those listeners an unexpected place in His life. Looking around the circle, He calls them His mother and brothers, and then includes sisters in His explanation: whoever does God’s will belongs to His family.
Being related to Jesus by birth does not give someone authority to redirect His mission. Nor is belonging to Him limited to His relatives. He welcomes people into a relationship described with the closest household names.
Doing God’s will means more than occupying a seat in that room. The people gathered around Him must receive what He teaches and respond to Him. Jesus is opening a family whose life is shaped by obedience to God.
That family does not erase our responsibilities to parents, children or siblings. It gives us additional people to love. Someone without nearby relatives can belong deeply among Christ’s people, and those who already have a close household are called to make room for others.

Consider someone who has little family nearby. An invitation, a lift or a thoughtful message may be welcome. Ask what would help and follow through. Christ’s welcome gives our care a reason deeper than convenience or shared interests.

Lord Jesus, thank You for welcoming people into Your family. Teach us to hear Your words and do the Father’s will. Help us care for those You have joined to us, especially people who feel alone. Amen.
