Nobody Lights a Lamp to Hide It

21Jesus also said to them, “Does anyone bring in a lamp to put it under a basket or under a bed? Doesn’t he set it on a stand?
22For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be brought to light.
23If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”
24He went on to say, “Pay attention to what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and even more will be added to you.
25For whoever has will be given more. But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”

A lamp belongs where its light can reach the room. Jesus asks whether someone would bring one in to hide it under a basket or bed instead of placing it on a stand. The image leads to a promise: what is hidden will be disclosed.
That matters after His teaching about parables. The kingdom’s mystery is being given to His disciples, and what is concealed is not beyond His purpose to reveal. They should keep listening to the One who gives light.
Jesus then tells them to attend to what they hear. The measure they use will be used for them, with more added. Receiving His teaching is consequential. They are responsible for the attention and response they give it, while the further understanding remains a gift.
His final words include both promise and warning. Those who have will receive more; those who do not have will lose even what they have. This is more serious than advice about improving concentration. A person can be exposed to Jesus’ words and still fail to receive them.
The sayings invite attentive trust rather than confidence that we already know enough. The Lord who brings hidden things to light is speaking. We can ask Him to help us hear, and respond to what He has already made clear.
