A Father Falls at His Feet

21When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.
22A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet
23and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”
24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.

Jesus crosses the sea again, and a large crowd gathers around Him. Jairus, a synagogue leader, comes and falls at His feet. His daughter is near death, and he urgently asks Jesus to come and lay His hands on her so she may recover and live.
Mark gives both the father’s name and his position. Neither keeps him from needing help. In this moment, he comes as a father pleading for his child and trusting that Jesus can do what he cannot.
His request is direct, but it is not empty of faith. He believes Jesus can heal her. He brings that hope to the One he is asking to come, without a speech about why his family deserves special attention.
Jesus goes with him. The crowd follows and presses close. These verses leave the journey unfinished; another person’s need will interrupt it before the account returns to Jairus’s daughter. We do not have to rush past the beginning to see the care already present. Jesus receives this father’s appeal and accompanies him.
Jairus cannot control what will happen on the road or at home. He can bring his urgent need to Jesus. His appeal gives us a picture of dependent faith when someone we love is beyond our ability to help.

Concern for someone we love can make prayer feel both urgent and difficult. We may know exactly what we want while barely knowing how to say it. Jairus brings a direct appeal, and Jesus receives him.
Bring the person’s need to the Lord, and continue whatever practical care is yours to give. We cannot promise ourselves Jairus’s exact outcome. We can trust the compassion of the One to whom he went, and ask others to help us pray when our own words are few.

Lord Jesus, we bring You the people whose needs weigh on us. Hear the requests we struggle to put into words. Give us faith in Your care and strength for the help we can offer. Amen.
