Reaching for the Edge of His Cloak

53When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and moored the boat.
54As soon as they got out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus
55and ran through that whole region, carrying the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was.
56And wherever He went—villages and towns and countrysides—they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him just to let them touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched Him were healed.

The boat lands at Gennesaret, and people recognize Jesus as soon as He steps ashore. News spreads through the region. They bring sick people on mats to wherever they hear He is.
Mark moves from one landing place to villages, towns and countryside. In the marketplaces, people lay those who are ill and ask that they might touch the fringe of Jesus’ cloak. All who touch Him are healed.
We have seen a woman reach for His clothing in the previous chapter. Now Mark describes many people doing so. The emphasis is on the healing Jesus gives, not on a power that belongs to fabric apart from Him.
Numbers commands Israel to wear tassels as reminders of God’s commandments. That instruction helps us understand the garment detail, though Mark does not explain the clothing or the thoughts of everyone reaching for it.
There is care in the carrying as well. People unable to reach Jesus on their own are brought by others. The account that began with immediate recognition becomes a picture of urgent need meeting generous mercy. Jesus is not simply known by name in this region; people are bringing their sick to Him.
How We Know
Numbers 15:38–39 commands tassels on garments as reminders to remember and obey God’s commands. This supplies relevant background for the fringe mentioned in Mark. Mark locates the healing in the encounter with Jesus, not in the garment considered on its own.
