The Argument on the Road

33Then they came to Capernaum. While Jesus was in the house, He asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?”
34But they were silent, for on the way they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.
35Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the last of all and the servant of all.”
36Then He had a little child stand among them. Taking the child in His arms, He said to them,
37“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in My name welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me welcomes not only Me, but the One who sent Me.”

In the house at Capernaum, Jesus asks what the disciples were discussing on the road. They say nothing. Mark tells us that they had argued about which of them was greatest.
The argument follows His teaching about being handed over and killed. While Jesus describes the path He will take, they are occupied with their standing. He sits down, calls the Twelve and gives them a different account of greatness:
“If anyone wants to be first, he must be the last of all and the servant of all.”
He places a child among them and takes the child in His arms. This is a person to welcome, not another competitor in their dispute. Receiving such a child in Jesus’ name is receiving Jesus, and receiving Jesus is receiving the Father who sent Him.
The honor of that welcome comes from Christ. We do not make someone valuable by deciding they are useful to us. Jesus gives His disciples a concrete act through which to express allegiance to Him: welcome the little one before them.
His correction reaches the way we measure both ourselves and others. Service is not a clever route to applause. It gives attention and care because we belong to the Lord who receives the child.

What This Means for Us

Give time to someone whose presence you have begun to take for granted. Listen to a child’s question, make space for a quieter voice or help someone join in. The purpose is care for that person, not earning a reputation for humility.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, free us from competing for importance. Teach us to welcome people in Your name and give them attentive care. Help us serve with gratitude for the welcome we receive from You. Amen.
