The Sign of Jonah

38Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”
39Jesus replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now One greater than Jonah is here.
42The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here.
43When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.
44Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ On its return, it finds the house vacant, swept clean, and put in order.
45Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and dwell there. And the final plight of that man is worse than the first. So will it be with this wicked generation.”

Some scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign. He calls the generation evil and adulterous, not because God never gives signs, but because they are demanding a spectacle while resisting the truth already in front of them. Jesus points them to the sign of Jonah.
Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, and Jesus says the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth in a similar way. The comparison points forward to Jesus' death and resurrection. Jesus is greater than Jonah, so his resurrection will be the decisive sign that the generation is refusing to receive.
Jesus also names the people of Nineveh, who repented when Jonah preached, and the queen of the South, who traveled to hear Solomon's wisdom. Both will rise in judgment against people who have received someone greater than Jonah or Solomon and still refuse to listen.
He then describes an unclean spirit leaving a person, wandering, and returning with seven other spirits when it finds the person swept and put in order but empty. Jesus explicitly applies this ending to the wicked generation before Him. Outward reform without receiving Him leaves a worse condition possible. It is not a diagnosis of mental illness, and families should never use it to shame someone who needs medical or psychological care.
Ask whether your household is demanding more proof from Jesus while ignoring what he has already made clear. Repentance is not cosmetic tidying. It is receiving Jesus' authority and filling life with faithful obedience.

The returning spirit also teaches that removing one bad habit is not the same as receiving a new center. Lasting change needs prayer, truthful relationships, practical structure, and sometimes treatment from trained professionals. Spiritual language should support care, not replace it.
Choose one outward reform that needs a deeper foundation. Confess what has been empty, invite trustworthy accountability, and fill the space with a practice that directs the household toward Jesus.

Lord Jesus, you are greater than Jonah and Solomon. Keep us from demanding spectacles while resisting your clear word; lead us into repentance that is lasting, supported, and full of faithful love. Amen.
